These simple tips and advice will save you money, help you look after your house and enjoy it more.

Safety: Improve the safety of your home with many simple tips. Read our page of simple corrections to make your home a safer place for you and your family.

Drainage and basement leaks are cause and effect. Poor drainage around your house is a major cause of wet basements. Disconnecting downspouts from footing drains, making sure water drains away from the house, and keeping soil well below the top of the foundation walls, especially inside window wells, are three important steps towards keeping your basement dry. Other ways to dry out your basement include coatings, footing drain improvement, and a sump pump. This article will help you understand what can be done.

Aluminium wiring isn't something to be feared. Follow the simple tips in this article to ensure that your aluminium wiring is safe.

Lead service pipe for water services causes concern. It's called "Plumbing" because the piping was originally lead (plumbum in Latin, and possibly the cause of the fall of the Roman Empire!) Use these common sense thoughts to reduce the possible effect of a lead water service pipe.

Structural issues can be safety matters. Use this article as a guide to recognise some important issues.

Insulation is very important for comfort, economy and more. Poor attic insulation and no vapour barrier beneath the insulation allows heat and water vapour to escape from your living space into the attic space. The water vapour condenses on the underside of your roof sheathing and eventually causes rot. If there is no vapour barrier under the attic insulation, use a non-vapour permeable ceiling paint to reduce water vapour transmission to acceptable levels for well ventilated attics. Discharging a bathroom or kitchen fan into the attic space has the same effect; don't do this! Improving attic insulation can reduce heating bills during the winter, and air conditioning loads during the summer.

Operating your air condition when the outside temperature is below about 50°F (10°C) can damage your compressor. The compressor unit is designed to pump hot gases; if the outside temperature is sufficiently low for the gases to condense into a liquid, damage to the compressor can result. We also recommend that no cover be placed over the outside unit; it doesn't need one and if you forget to remove it in the spring before turning on the system, the compressor burns out in about 5 minutes. This is an expensive and preventable replacement.
